Book Review:

The Cover: Once again, Jennifer E. Smith is releasing a cover-buy book! And now, it’s in my favorite shade! Featuring a gray image with a black, white, and Pink fonts for the title, this cover of Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between, in one word, is stunning! Absolutely stunning! Also, I’m in love with this concept of possessing only one vibrant color per book for a cover. It brings out the beauty of both the image and the single-colored title. (5 out of 5 stars)

The Story: The story’s concept was simple. Being accepted at two different colleges, Aidan and Clare simply had one last night before they go their separate ways. This was their last hurrah, a chance either to go on through their lives as a couple with a long distance relationship or as two people who will have to undergo a new phase, without any commitment with each other. What I loved about this is that it was refreshing to read a romantic contemporary which started out with a couple who was already together. It was fun reading through their last night together, going on “stops” to places where memories can be found.

To those who know me, as a person, friend, or relative, they know that I am humorous. I enjoy anything that’s comedic. And with that said, I am thrilled to share with you that I am absolutely in love with Aidan and Clare. They are witty, comedic, and such humorous characters whether individually, or as a couple. They complement each other and it is with this fact that I fell in love with them from page one.

Reading this was reminiscent of watching High School Musical 3. The conflicts found within this book are alike with the movie’s. The struggles of choosing among different colleges, the pressure of hanging on to a relationship from a long distance, and trying to keep your friends close while enduring higher education: everything is here! The characters might as well be named Troy and Gabriella. And this made me so happy because HSM3 was my favorite movie back then.

I’m summing this up with an encouragement I’ve learned while reading the pages of this stunning book: Be brave for love, people! It will take you to further heights. And it will show you that some risks are worth taking, especially with someone you love. (4 out of 5 stars)

The Ending: *This part is filled with spoilers. I suggest you skip this part if you don’t want to cry later on.* As the night turned into morning, the inevitable indeed occurred. Clare had to go to college. She had to leave their town behind, even if it meant leaving Aidan too. Heartbreaking, yes. But the story taught me so much more about the wonders of letting go. Letting someone go doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t love them. It just means that you love them enough to trust time and your love to be stronger than present situations. You trust that destiny WILL make a way for that person to find you again, when circumstances are in your favor. Everything was as it should be with this novel. The protagonists both got what they wanted: happy families, successful adjustments, and last but certainly not the least, Clare and Aidan were both happy. Also, the two have another shot at love. What more can a reader ask for? (5 out of 5 stars)

The Verdict: A fast-paced read with immeasurably appealing characters and an epic storytelling, Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between will surely appeal to YA Romance lovers worldwide. It will touch the hearts of millions of readers as Jennifer E. Smith’s past works already have. And, yes. Jennifer did a great job squeezing an entire love story into one night. A great read indeed!(4.67 out of 5 stars)

Quotable Quotes:

“It’s true that the world is full of signs. They just mean different things to different people.” – Clare

“You’re gonna do great things too. You just don’t know what they are yet.” – Clare

“But this is the type of closeness you don’t notice until it’s gone, until you’re standing on opposite ends of a dimly lit porch less than an hour after deciding to break up, and all that’s left between you is a vast and painfully polite distance”

“And now, two years later, they’re finally here: folded together like this, with the night thrumming all around them and the sound of his heartbeat loud in her ears.

And yet, he’s no longer hers.

All this, and the only thing it means is goodbye.”

“The day will come when you’ll be sitting there looking up at the sky, and you won’t be thinking of me at all. You won’t need to anymore. And it’ll be a good thing, because it means you’ll be happy.” – Aidan

  1. I totally agree about the cover! And I like that all of her books match. They look so pretty together on my shelf.

I loved the ending of the book. It just ended in the best way that it possibly could. There were a couple of pages towards the end where I was freaking out and thinking the worst. But I’m glad that it ended the way that it did.
